Pfc. McLaughlin Is Killed In Vietnam Oct. 4

A solemn high Mass of requiem was celebrated in St. Theresa’s Church West Roxbury, at 10 a.m. yesterday for Pfc. William F. McLaughlin, 25, of 237B Cummins hwy., Roslindale, who died in Vietnam Oct. 4. He was the son of Mrs. Catherine (Donahue) McLaughlin and the late George R. McLaughlin. Pfc. McLaughlin had been in the service a year and had been in Vietnam only two months when he met his death. A member of the Army Engineers Corps, he was aiding in dismantling a bunker in a complex near the Cambodian border when it collapsed.

A native of West Roxbury and a long-time resident, he attended the Lyndon grammar school and was a member of the first graduating class of Catholic Memorial High School in 1961. He attended the Community College in Boston for two years, worked for the United Fruit Co., attended the Cardinal O’Connell minor seminary in Jamaica Plain and obtained a B.S. degree from St. John’s Seminary, Brighton.

He entered the service shortly after leaving the Seminary, taking his basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J., and his engineering training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He went overseas in the latter part of July.

In addition to his mother, he leaves four sisters, Mrs. Patricia Ferro, of Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard; Mrs. Bernadette Costa, of Starbird st., Roslindale; Mrs. Pauline Imbornone, of Sheffield street, Roslindale, and Miss Christine McLaughlin, of the home address. Also, he is survived by a brother, George R. McLaughlin of Burgess avenue, Westwood.

Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.
